Working together to improve health outcomes

This section of our website provides resources to our health partners in the medical profession to help improve the lives of women and children. Here you’ll find information on classes, breastfeeding services, nutrition and referrals.

WIC’s health and nutrition program has a long-standing record of improving health outcomes of women, infants and children who are at risk for nutrition-related illness.

Studies show pregnant women who participate in WIC have fewer premature births, fewer low birth weight babies, experience fewer fetal and infant deaths, seek prenatal care earlier in pregnancy, and consume more key nutrients like iron, protein, calcium, and Vitamins A and C. It has been estimated that for each dollar spent on WIC for prenatal education, $3.50 is saved in Medicaid and disability payments and in medical-care costs paid by private health-care providers.

Check out our section on Partner Resources for more information on how to access these and other benefits available to you through Texas WIC.

Reckitt/Mead Johnson issues voluntary recall of some cans of Nutramigen LGG

A voluntary recall was issued for select batches of Nutramigen LGG powder on December 30th, 2023 by the manufacturer due to concern over potential bacterial contamination with the organism Cronobacter sakazakii.

More information for WIC families including a list of recalled products is available at Patients with recalled formula should not use the recalled formula.

This is a specialized formula that is available through WIC only with Medical Request for Therapeutic Formula. Not all Nutramigen LGG was affected by the recall. However, if your patient has difficulty finding it, WIC staff may be able to change the benefits on their WIC card to the concentrate or ready-to-feed formulations. If your patient needs to change to alternative brand hypoallergenic formula, they will need an updated medical request form from the health care provider prior to being issued an alternative by WIC. Your patient will need to return to their WIC clinic to make any changes to their prescribed formula.

Prescribers may list multiple acceptable alternative formulas on the medical request form to allow WIC staff to issue what is locally available. For example, write in “Alimentum, Nutramigen, or store brand hypoallergenic”.

The following hypoallergenic formulas may be an alternative option to Nutramigen LGG if needed:

  • Alimentum
  • Extensive HA
  • Pepticate
  • Pregestimil
  • Store Label Hypoallergenic formulas (including Parent’s Choice, HEB Baby, Comforts, Tippy Toes, Up&Up, Signature Care)
