How to Make It

Ingredients

  • 1 large apple, any variety, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices whole wheat bread
  • 8 slices of cheese, any variety
  • 2 tablespoons butter, divided

Preparation

1
Build sandwiches by placing four slices of bread on a cutting board or plate. Top each piece of bread with one slice of cheese. Add an even layer of sliced apples to each sandwich, then top with a second piece of cheese and remaining bread.
2
In a griddle or large skillet, melt ½ tablespoon of butter over medium heat.
3
Add two sandwiches to the skillet, pressing down slightly with spatula. Cook for 4-6 minutes until cheese begins to melt and bottoms of sandwiches become golden brown.
4
Add an additional ½ tablespoon of butter to the skillet. Once melted, carefully flip sandwiches using a large spatula.
5
Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted. Remove from stove and cool slightly before serving.
6
Repeat steps 2-6 for remaining sandwiches.
Recipe Tips

Explore a variety of flavors by trying different apple and cheese combinations and additional toppings, such as:

  • Cheddar cheese and Granny Smith apples
  • Swiss cheese, Fuji apples and bacon
  • Mozzarella cheese, Gala apples and arugula
  • Monterey Jack cheese, Granny Smith apples and spinach

Grilled cheese is a great finger food for the whole family. When serving young children, be sure apples are sliced thin to avoid choking risks. Try cutting sandwiches into smaller pieces that are easy to hold.
